Zakat

The Zakat Assessment & Collection Agency (ZACA) was established to assist our community members with education and other tools to properly practice the 3rd pillar of Islam, a very important ibada (act of worship).  ZACA conducts educational seminars on Zakat, correct calculation methods, where Zakat should be paid, different types of Zakat, and much more.  ZACA provides consultation for proper calculation and payment of your Zakat, and is also responsible for collecting Zakat for the Muslms in the Central Florida community.  A calculation worksheet is available in the ZACA brochure for your convenience.  Should you have a complex case with a variety of assets and other conditions, you can make an appointment and a qualified Imam and accountant will be happy to assist you.  Zakat, being the third pillar of Islam, is an important act of worship as stressed by being highlighted at least 82 times in the Quran along with Salat.  May Allah (swt) accept from us the efforts of our ibadat and Bless us with the depth of their Truth.

CONDITIONS FOR ZAKAH

Zakah is the third pillar of Islam. It enables us to purify our wealth and fulfill a compulsory act of worship. Several conditions must be fulfilled before zakah is due. These conditions are necessary as zakah can only be applied on those who are of legal age and who own enough assets. These conditions are categorized into two broad categories, namely performer and asset.

1. Zakah Performer

Muslim

Every Muslim who has attained the age of puberty (bolough) and owns enough assets is required to pay zakah .

2. Zakah Asset

Full ownership

A Muslim will only be required to pay zakah if he or she has full and legal ownership of an asset.

Assets intended for increasing wealth

Zakah is payable only on those assets that are acquired for the purpose of creating or generating wealth. Some examples of this type of assets are cash savings, inventory of goods used for trade or sale, investments such as gold or securities that have potential for appreciation in value, and livestock or crops that are traded or sold.

Assets that exceed a minimum value

Zakah need only be paid on those assets that exceed a minimum value. This minimum value is calculated based on the market price of 3 oz. of gold. This minimum value is termed nisab.

Completion of Haul

Haul is defined as the completion period for a zakah asset. The length of time for haul is one Hijrah year.

Once these conditions are met the payment of zakah becomes an obligation for a Muslim.

BENEFICIARIES OF ZAKAH\

Recipients of Zakah

There are eight categories of people who are the beneficiaries of zakah which are mentioned in the Qur’an.

  1. The Poor (al-Fuqura’)
  2. The Needy (al-Masakin)
  3. Administrators of Zakah (al-A’mileen)
  4. Those inclined to Islam (Muallaf)
  5. Captives seeking freedom (Riqab)
  6. Debtors (al-gharimeen)
  7. For the cause of Allah (fi sabil lillah)
  8. Wayfarers (ibn as-sabil)
  9. Apply for Zakah

To apply for Zakah assistance please contact the Imam of your Masjid to complete the application process.

Payment of Zakah

The zakah is to be paid locally to the Muslim community where the individual lives and earns his or her income. According to the scholars, the poor of this city have a prior claim over local zakah than the poor elsewhere. The leadership of the local Muslim community is responsible to collect and distribute the zakah. The Zakah Committee will distribute zakah to those individuals in Central Florida in the above categories. Zakah can only be sent outside when the Zakah Committee has surplus over the needs of the local community. Therefore, the correct way to give our zakah is as follows:
  1. Pay zakah on a specific date each Hijrah year, for example: Ramadan 27.
  2. Calculate your zakah or have the Zakah Committee or an accountant calculate it.
  3. Make the intention when paying zakah and do not mix zakah with other donations.
  4. Pay your zakah on time and in full to the Zakah Committee (which is in charge of collecting and distributing zakah in Central Florida.)

The amount of zakah payable is approximately 5 lb. of staple food in the relevant country or an amount of money that is equivalent to the price of the food. The dollar amount is approximately $10.00 per person.

Zakah al-Mal (on wealth)

Zakah al-Mal is a cyclic charity based on the amount of wealth owned by a Muslim individual or organization. Meaning of the word "Islam"

Islam:

The word Islam literally translates in English to "becoming peaceful, acceptance, submission, self-surrender". It comes from the word Salam meaning peace. Muslims believe that the ummah (global community of Muslims) are all brothers and sisters of Islam and should be treated with utmost respect.

Qur'an:

The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe the Qur'an is the sayings of God.
Islam teaches that the Qur'an was revealed by God to Muhammad with the help of an angel called Jibreel. The Qur'an teaches the Muslims to follow the right path by only doing good to please God. Muslims believe God alone decides who goes to Jannah (Heaven) and that doing good in this lifetime will bring them closer to God. The Qur'an has a total of 30 chapters. In each chapter there are many verses. Many Muslims try to memorize the entire Qur'an and ones who do are called a Hafiz or Hafez.
Other important books are the Sunnah, or biographies of Muhammad and Hadith compilations, which are collections of sayings attributed to Muhammad.

Place of worship:

Muslims pray in a place of worship called the mosque. The Muslims place of worship is properly known as a masjid in Arabic. Most masjids have at least one dome, and some have one or more towers. But a masjid does not need to have a dome or tower. Muslims take their shoes off before entering the masjid to pray. Prayer is one of the most important things that a Muslim does.

Call to prayer:

The Muslim is called to prayer five times a day. This call to prayer is called Adhan. The muezzin, a man appointed to call to prayer, uses a loudspeaker which carries the voice for the people nearby. This is often done out loud publicly in Muslim countries. Most people are called to prayer in Islamic countries as a daily part of life.
